What is polysomnography used for?

 

Polysomnography (PSG) through the recording of numerous parameters (snoring, sleep apnea, hypopneas, body movements, chest and abdomen movements, blood oxygenation, heartbeat frequency) allows to detect the presence and quantify the alterations sleep-wake cycle and therefore the sleep deficit or excess sleep of each patient, also records sleep disorders related to internal and mental illnesses (apnea, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy, etc.).

How does polysomnography take place?

Polysomnography is performed preferably at home in order to reproduce sleep and related phenomena in the most usual and physiological conditions.

The device for the study of sleep is placed by the patient directly 5 minutes before going to sleep and removed the following morning by the patient himself.
